Marcoabella & biodynamics. Marco Abella has adapted biodynamic methods to its own particular environment in order to express the authenticity, characteristics and essence of Porrera. Respecting the environment, we practice ecological agriculture adapting the most modern biodynamic techniques. A biodynamic vineyard uses itself, in conjunction with time and nature, to produce grapes without the use of additives. Since the vineyard as part of the living earth, the vineyard cannot be separated from itself and its surroundings. The vineyard is a whole organism, alive and able to sustain itself. We plant and prun by the phases of the moon. The climate of Porrera (dry climate...) discourages the proliferation of molds, so spraying fungicides—prohibited in Biodynamic farming—can easily be avoided. Marco Abella is interested in having naturally healthy plants so we enrich our soil with cattle dung, without artificial fer¬tilizers or pesticides. We also administrate homeopathic doses of natural products according to the phases of the moon and sun and working the soil by old-fashioned methods such as ploughing and tilling to restore health, life and natural rhythms to the soil and what is grown in it. We administrate  preventative doses of camomile, bark, fennel, dandelions or valerian, anticipating problems by intimate knowledge of each vine. It is the use, and particularly the timing of the use, of these preparations that particularly distinguishes biodynamic viticulture from organic The only inorganic or mineral substance that you may find being used at the vineyard is quartz as part of a fungal disease treatment. We create the homeopathic mixture that, when sprayed on the vines, will—in theory—help the grapes ripen and improve their flavors. Biodynamic viticulture may still need, and permits, vineyard applications of copper sulphate.  We think we have more intensity and a truer expression of terroir in our wines practicing byodinamics, and we feel confortable for the long-term benefit of our parcels ecosystem.
